Note: For the past 7 years I divided my time between Croatia and California. This year (2007) is the first year that I will stay in California for the whole year to finish a project of compiling a survey of Croatian immigrants to Watsonville, Calif. But I will leave this page here because I still have people in Croatia who can do the same job as me -- even better, because they are locals. And if you need information from California, here I am. -- Tom
Genealogy and Family History Services
I live in Cavtat, a village just SE of Dubrovnik, from January to June of each year. I am originally from California and spend the rest of my time there. I do door-to-door Croatian genealogy research in both places.
Luckily, in the Dubrovnik area we have two genealogists who have done much good research, in fact the most extensive genealogy research in all of Croatia: Nenad Vekaric' and Niko Kapetanic. For family trees and family histories, you must always use them because they are true experts. But they do not always want to do small jobs. I suggest you ask them first, and what they won't do perhaps I can do. For example, I can:
- take photos of original documents in the churches or archives. There are many more documents than what the LDS has microfilmed. See here.
- visit the village to see if the family is still there.
- conduct interviews with existing family. Copy any old photos.
- take photos of houses, villages, cemeteries, etc.
- act as liaison with Vekaric' or Kapetanic' if you get no response.
- translate or evaluate old documents (Croatian, Latin, Italian). What I can't do directly, I can get done through the many professional contacts I have in the area.

Geographical area covered is from Split to Montenegro.
I charge US$15 per hour plus travel expenses. Estimates given.
I also do research on the West Coast of the U.S. from July to December
